1.
Introduction
ecoLake has
developed a process to protect the external surfaces of the pipes of
HRSG boilers from rusting during the annual shut-down periods by fogging
the interior with a safe, water-based corrosion inhibitor. Until now the
tubes rusting during shut down has been problematic and has had to be
managed to limit the environmental impact. Now there is a safe, facile
method of treatment with a superior environmental profile which may also
extend equipment life.

2. Technical
Proposal
The anti-corrosion product used is formulated with organic contact and
vapour corrosion inhibitors delivered in a water-based formulation. When
fogged into the boiler the corrosion inhibitor sticks to exterior
surfaces of all the internal metal pipework as a molecular layer.
The system of fogging provides the most economical and environmentally
acceptable method of corrosion protection of the exterior surfaces of
the steel pipework during shut downs.
Once the boiler is restarted, environmental issues with the exhausts
from the boiler are eliminated and the piping has been protected from
corrosion during the critical period through the shut-down.
3.
Scope
The scope of the detailed procedure, available on request, describes how
the external surfaces of the steam pipes will be protected from
corrosion by fogging into all levels of the HRSG boilers through the
access doors.
4.
Methodology
The service offered includes site visits to evaluate suitability and
development of COSHH, Risk & Manual handling forms working with the
customer SHE department. The entire job from design to implementation is
carried out by our qualified experienced contractors. No post-boiler
start clean-up is required.

Technical Issues & Testing on Start-up
As the unit is started and hot gas from the GT is fed into the
HRSG (boiler) the velocity of the gas stream will start to scrub the
product molecules from the metal surface. Within approximately 24 hours
of operation the molecules will be gone from the system.
Independent
testing in the
UK
by Plant Design Engineers show that the product and process used:
-
will not
negatively impact mechanical properties of the various alloys used in GT,
ST and HRSG
-
does not
promote IGA, IGASCC, SCC
-
does not
impact Thermal Barrier Coatings
Independent
testing also shows that the product has no negative impact on the
catalyst used in the SCR system. For further information please
