ecoLake provides a positive list of industrial products and raw materials that meet the following criteria:

Biodegradable
the total amount of organic matter breaks-down after exposure to micro-organisms with the passing of a generation.

Compostable
after exposure to microorganisms, the total amount of organic matter breaks-down to carbon dioxide and water within the time frame of a domestic composting process

the composting time can be decreased by using an industrial composting process

Environmentally Benign
the ecoLake product provides an opportunity to achieve a lower environmental impact compared with traditional products used in the application

Non-Toxic
Free of hazardous substances (e.g. hazardous atmospheric pollutants, halogens, halocarbons, ozone degrading elements, carcinogens)

Note: all chemicals whether naturally occurring or synthetic must be considered potentially dangerous and the Safety Data Sheet for the product must be consulted before use

Low Global Warming
ecoLake is evaluating the applicability of CO2 off-set programmes. The best course of environmental action is to avoid the use of the product by optimising the application/process. Purchasing a product fit for purpose in a specific industrial application with the lowest transport contribution to CO2 emissions is not routinely possible.

Low or no VOC
substances that have a vapour pressure ≥ 0.1mmHg i.e. easily become airborne under ambient conditions and could contribute to pollution through reaction with sunlight contribute to smog and acid rain.

Natural - Sustainable - Renewable
created from agricultural processes where Genetic Modification is destroyed during processing i.e. not present in the finished product. It is normal that crops from Industrial Agriculture i.e. grown for an industrial end-use, do not enter the food chain.

there is no attempt to identify at this stage the total energy demand e.g. fertilisers, carbon based heating, transportation, which is required in the agricultural process

Packaging
appropriate to protect the product during transportation, use and storage not excessive

The criteria used to classify ecoLake products can not necessarily be carried over to the products after they have been used by the customer i.e. after use the ecoLake product could be contaminated by components in the customer’s process or by other raw materials used.
